In memory of Dr. med. Armand Bottani

It is with deep sadness that the Swiss Society of Medical Genetics (SSMG) learned of the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Dr. med. Armand Bottani.

Dr. Bottani was a dedicated specialist in medical genetics (FMH) who devoted his career to the care of patients and families with congenital developmental disorders. As a long-standing member of the Service of Genetic Medicine at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG) and the Hôpital du Valais in Sion, he played a central clinical role, ensuring high-quality genetic care for patients both within and beyond university centers. His commitment helped to strengthen and disseminate the concepts of clinical genetics and dysmorphology within the Swiss healthcare system and to establish genetic care as an integral part of health management throughout the life of each individual.

Dr. Bottani was deeply engaged in postgraduate training in medical genetics, educating and guiding numerous residents and fellows who are now active specialists in the field across Switzerland and abroad. Colleagues and trainees remember him as a generous mentor and astute clinician known for his sharp clinical eye, attentive listening, thoughtful communication, and unwavering sense of responsibility towards his patients.

Within the Swiss Society of Medical Genetics, Dr. Bottani was highly appreciated for his collegial spirit and active involvement in the life of the society, particularly in clinical and educational matters. He served for many years as a member of the board and as a delegate to the educational committee, the medical chamber and the GUMEK. He organized and chaired the national dysmorphology meeting over many years, shaping its development and impact.

As one of the pioneers of medical genetics in Switzerland, Armand helped to firmly anchor our discipline in individual patient care. Early on, he exemplified how close collaboration with patient organizations can benefit all parties involved. His legacy endures in the structures he helped to build, in the colleagues he supported, and the many patients and families who benefitted from his expertise and inexhaustible empathy.

The Swiss Society of Medical Genetics expresses its deepest gratitude for Dr. Bottani’s lifelong dedication to our field. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and former trainees. He will be remembered with great respect and affection, as his humanity, his genuine concern for others, and his sense of humor have left a deep and lasting impression on us all.
